What is Predictive Sleep in the Owlet Dream app?

Een moeder houdt haar baby vast naast het babybed

Your baby wakes from a nap, and you wonder when the next sleep should be. The Owlet Dream app has a feature for that: Predictive Sleep. Here is what it does and where to find it, according to Owlet's help centre.

What does Predictive Sleep do?

Predictive Sleep uses your baby's historical sleep data and best practices for sleep based on your baby's age to recommend the next appropriate sleep window.

The Dream Sock tracks your baby's sleep and wakings. If you have a Dream Duo, the Dream Sock is part of it.

How long a daytime nap lasts varies. According to Owlet, it can be 20 minutes to 3 hours, depending on how much sleep your baby feels they need, how much sleep they previously had, how long they have been awake, their age and their developmental stage.

Where do you find it in the app?

The app's home screen shows the live sleep status. During a sock session, that card gives information about the sleep session. If you have been tracking your baby's sleep and no session is running, the card tells you when the next predicted sleep window starts.

Follow your baby first

Predictive Sleep is a guideline based on average sleep needs at different developmental stages, Owlet says in a general help centre article. It is not a replacement for following your baby's cues. If there is not enough information to calculate a sleep window, the app tells you so on the home screen, according to the same article.

On wake times, the Dutch youth health care guideline (in Dutch) says there is no known evidence-based data on what normal wake times are for babies. That is why it matters to watch closely for your baby's signs of tiredness. Read more in our article on wake windows.

So use the suggested sleep window as a guideline. If your baby shows sleepy signs earlier, or is still wide awake, you know best.

Predictive Sleep and Dream Sock notifications

Predictive Sleep suggests a sleep window. The Dream Sock also measures heart rate and oxygen level: if a reading moves outside the preset zones, the base station gives a light and sound signal and you get a notification in the app. The Dream Sock is intended for routine home monitoring of healthy babies. Its notifications help you decide whether to seek medical advice. They do not replace a diagnosis or treatment by a doctor.
