Fitting the Dream Sock and avoiding red marks

Een moeder tilt haar lachende baby op, met de Dream Sock aan het voetje

A sock that fits well is less likely to interrupt readings or irritate the skin. According to Owlet's instructions, signs of skin irritation or frequent notifications can point to the wrong size. Here is how to fit the Dream Sock and avoid red marks, according to Owlet's European instructions for use and help centre.

Which size to choose

The Dream Sock box contains four fabric socks: size 1 and size 2, each for the left and the right foot. Every sock is marked R or L.

SizeYour baby's weight
Size 1less than 5.4 kg
Size 25.4 to 13.6 kg

If your baby weighs less than 2.5 kg, the Dream Sock is not suitable. Weight is a starting point. The right fit also depends on age and foot shape. If the first sock does not fit well, try the other size. Check the fit regularly: babies grow quickly.

  • A strap does not reach the hook and loop fastener on its own? Go up a size. Do not stretch the straps.
  • A strap goes past the fastener? Go down a size.

Once your baby reaches 13.6 kg or outgrows the largest sock, stop using the Dream Sock.

Fitting it step by step

  1. Make sure the foot is clean and dry. Do not use lotion, cream or powder on the feet, and do not apply the sock and sensor to wet skin.
  2. Put the sensor in the sock: line up the notch on the sensor with the notch on the sock and stretch the opening of the sock over the sensor.
  3. Place the sock on the correct foot, with the notch on the outside of the foot behind the little toe. The sock must not touch the toes.
  4. Fasten the toe strap around the foot above the toes. Then wrap the ankle strap around the back of the ankle and fasten it on top of the foot.
  5. Do not stretch the straps. The sock lies flat against the skin, with no gaps, but does not dig in. The rough side of the fastener does not touch the skin.

Only fasten the sensor to your baby's foot with the Dream Sock, never with anything else: that could injure the foot.

If the sensor windows pull away from the foot, the sock may be too loose. An air gap like that can interrupt readings. A yellow notification can point to a placement problem: read more in our article on Dream Sock notifications.

Switch feet at least every 8 hours

Switch feet every 8 hours, and also after charging the sensor. If your baby has sensitive skin, check the feet every 4 hours and switch feet then too. Always use the left sock for the left foot and the right sock for the right foot.

Checking the skin

Check the feet every time you put the sock on, and do not put it on an irritated foot. In the first week, and after changing sock size, check the skin every 4 hours. According to the instructions, temporary marks from the sock are normal if they fade within 8 hours.

Do you see a red mark near the sensor? According to the instructions, stop using it on that foot straight away. Use the sock only on the other foot until the irritation has gone completely, checking that foot every 4 hours. If both feet are irritated, stop using the Dream Sock and contact your healthcare provider. You can also contact them with any questions. Owlet customer support can also help.

Where do these marks come from? Owlet's help centre lists:

  • Pressure: fitting the sock too tightly, not switching feet, the wrong size, or the sensor on a bony prominence.
  • Moisture: extra moisture under the sock can make the sensor stick to the skin, which then rubs as your baby kicks.
  • Friction: as with new shoes, rubbing can damage the outer layer of the skin.
  • The wrong sock: a left sock on the right foot can create pressure marks, like a shoe on the wrong foot.
  • A dirty sensor or harsh soap: built-up dirt, or soap that is too harsh or not rinsed off properly.

Washing the sock and sensor

Wash the sock and sensor at least every two weeks, or more often if they are visibly dirty.

  • Switch the sensor off and take it out of the sock before cleaning. You switch it off in the app, via Account, your Owlet device and Turn off Sensor (according to the instructions). Scrub the sensor clean without submerging it.
  • Use a mild detergent, the same one you use for baby clothes. Avoid hand soap, antibacterial soap and washing-up liquid. Avoid baby wipes too: they leave a residue that can irritate the skin.
  • Wash the sock by hand or, according to the instructions, on a delicate cycle. Do not tumble dry.
  • Let the sock and sensor dry completely before using them again. To switch the sensor back on, place it on the base station charging port for at least 3 seconds and then remove it.

When to replace a sock

The instructions give an expected use life of 3 months per fabric sock. Also replace a sock if it is stretched, the fabric is coming apart, it has holes or rough patches, the fabric or sensor windows are ripped, warped or otherwise damaged, the fastener is worn and no longer closes properly, stains will not come out even after several washes, or it has been in contact with infectious substances such as human waste. An extra set of four fabric socks, in size 1 and 2, is available in the shop.
